Restoration Gathering Festival & Contest Pow Wow

Cedar City - Paiute Tribe

Sounds of drums and songs echoed off the red rocks of Cedar City on Saturday as Paiutes from across the Southwest converged to pow wow. This weekend marked the 38th annual Restoration Gathering Festival, hosted by the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, designed to bring together young and old from across the tribe. Saturday morning started with a parade along Main Street,...with members riding on colorful floats and tossing candy to passers-by. The winners of the Miss Paiute Pageant rode on top of the first float, waving to the crowd and posing for pictures. Tribal leaders, clothed in ceremonial dress, walked down the road, stopping to sing a song or play traditional instruments. After the parade, the big event started — a dance competition for cash prizes up to $1,000. Starting with the grand entry, hopeful dancers worked their way into the arena, vying for the judges’ attention. Waving feathers and wearing regalia with intricate beadwork of turquoise and orange, the dancers jump and spin, catching the light around them. Dancers traveled from across Utah, Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico to compete. As the afternoon went on, temperatures rose to 90 degrees, and yet it didn’t seem to slow the competitors, covered in heavy regalia. After the festivities were concluded, everyone joined for a feast in the Paiute Tribal Center.
