As a designer,

I thrive off the struggle of developing the perfect balance of elements to achieve the best possible end result.

I have always been drawn to problem solving, and design has proven to be the most difficult problem to solve yet. Every project brings forth new challenges and things I have yet to consider. I approach projects with equal consideration for function and aesthetics, because in the end I am not just an artist; I am a communicator and problem solver.

Plato's Republic Project

PLATO'S REPUBLIC

Four Book Series

PLATO'S REPUBLIC

Plato's Republic is a philosophical dialogue from 300 BCE discussing justice in men and the state. A common explanation for the traits of a good man are the four cardinal virtues: justice, wisdom, temperance, and courage. The covers of these books feature anatomical illustrations of parts of the body associated with each virtue. When each of the books connect in a circle, the illustrations are completed throughout and you have all the parts of a just man.

Veneto Cigars Project

VENETO

Cigar Packaging/Branding

VENETO CIGARS

I created the company of Veneto Cigars for a packaging and branding project for a three-dimensional graphic design course. Veneto is a top of the line cigar company drawing inspiration from the region of Veneto, Italy as well as the classic image of an Italian mobster. The brand was meant to create a modern style while still capturing the usual feel of century old cigar brands.

The combination poker set and cigar box idea spurred from the typical image of mobsters gathering around for a couple stogies and some cards. When you open the sharp, clean designed box, you first see the poker set. The poker set can removed, giving the feeling there is a false bottom to the box, as if you’ve come across something hidden for a reason, much like the lives of the mobsters. The box I built and designed, made of solid oak, and lined with a high end fabric is meant to further the quality of the brand and give you the impression you’ve received the highest end product.

WHO ANNUAL REPORT

Publication Design

ANNUAL REPORT

The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations that deals with public health. To represent them through the annual report I wanted to focus on imagery of the people they are helping, bringing it back to why they do what they do.

Mood Mag Project

MOODMAG

Digital Publication

MOODMAG: LUNCHBOX EDITION

As kids we all had our lunch boxes that had our favorite toy, super hero, or movie character on it. It was our way of expressing ourselves to everyone around us. Mood Mag Lunchbox Edition is an interactive magazine dedicated to your quirky passions and interests. Each article tells about the author's nerdiest hobbies while using methods to create animations and interaction to bring the reader in.

My Mood Mag article was on space exploration and more specifically the James Webb Space Telescope and what it plans to do. I have an interactive timeline demonstrating the stages of the big bang, as well as an diagram explaining the electromagnetic spectrum that includes a slider to better understand it.

Men Of Winter Project

MEN OF WINTER

Catalog/Photography

MEN OF WINTER

Men Of Winter is a publication designed around the experience of meeting somebody for the first time. With a high end appearance and tongue in cheek undertones and content, it explores the steps of a first impression experimenting with pages sizes and continually building information. The design was created to have a classy feel, but to contradict itself in being humorous, purposely pretentious, and outright ridiculous once you begin reading and considering the whole idea.

"The first impression is everything."

This publication is meant to deliver the first impression like you would experience in real life, you see them, but information getting down to the real them is revealed little by little. You start off with somebody else's opinions in the "reviews" just as you might have people telling you about the person. Flip the first page, and the reviews are no longer seen, nor revelant, you are assessing the obvious "specs", noticing their height, hair color, eyes, etc. As the next page is flipped, you lose the title of Specs but the information remains as you get to truly know the person.

While inspired by a firsthand experience meeting someone and a high end style of design, it is all meant to be read completely tongue in cheek. The reviews and bios are outrageous, creating some ridiculous idea of what this person or "product" is. It is supposed to give you the impression of a high end clothing catalog, as if the clothes are for sale, but is meant to entertain you once you get to actually reading it and see that the individuals are the true product.

Architectural World Project

ARCHITECTURAL WORLD

Poster/Photo Compositing

SAMSUNG GS5

The goal of this poster was to draw inspiration from an architectural structure and a current music video to create an ad for the Samsung Galaxy S5. I merged the geometric forms of Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water with the landscape, just as he was trying to do with the original design of the building. The music video I am using to advertise the phone is Woodkid's video for Run Boy Run. The video creates a surreal flattened landscape with strong contrasts and strong lighting.

AMERICANA SHOW POSTER

Letterpress/Typography

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE POSTER

For this show poster for a production of A Streetcar Named Desire, I drew inspiration from traditional Americana letterpress design and the New Orleans setting the play takes place in. The process of printing the poster merged the process of letterpress printing with today's technology. The design was first created digitally, but then using a laser cutter, I cut and engraved the design into plates of birch plywood. These pieces were then mounted, inked, and printed on the letterpress.
